Vickie’s Story

At Active Prospects, we’re proud to share the remarkable journeys of the people we support, and Vickie’s story is one that stands out. From overcoming immense challenges in her early life to embracing a future full of independence and joy, Vickie’s journey showcases resilience, love, and the transformative impact of dedicated care.

Vickie, who is 36 years old, experienced a serious illness at six months of age that resulted in lifelong brain damage. As a result, she has very limited vision and can say only a few words. Despite these challenges, Vickie has an undeniable zest for life. She requires 24-hour, one-to-one care, which she receives at an Active Prospects home. With the support of the dedicated care team, she thrives, engaging in activities such as swimming and shopping, which bring her greater independence and joy. Her parents are delighted with how happy and fulfilled she is.

For years, Vickie’s parents, Lorraine and Scott, had hoped to care for her at home for as long as possible. However, they worried about what would happen when they could no longer manage her care. However, it was Vickie herself who, at the age of 33, signalled that she needed full-time residential support. With both parents working, her grandparents growing frail, and her siblings raising families of their own, Vickie’s support network had become stretched. She expressed her unhappiness by refusing to get out of bed and refusing to board the bus to her day-care centre. Recognising her needs, Lorraine and Scott turned to Active Prospects.

When Vickie first stayed at an Active Prospects home, she adapted quickly. A flat was available, and she stayed there for a couple of nights. During that time, the staff kept her parents informed and reassured them that Vickie was doing well. After returning home for the weekend, Vickie showed clear enthusiasm for her new environment by eagerly returning for another week.

Since then, Vickie has flourished in her new home. Her parents and siblings visit often, and she spends one night a week with them, maintaining strong family connections. Living locally means the family can remain closely involved in her life. Lorraine notes how happy Vickie looks whenever they see her in town with her care worker, always smiling and happy!

“All any parent wants is for their child to be happy.”
