A New Beginning in Brighton & Hove
This year, Reg marked a very special milestone – his 40th birthday. He chose to celebrate surrounded by everyone at Valley Drive, during a visit to what would soon become his new home.
Reg’s life has not been easy. From an early age, he experienced many challenges and spent much of his life in care or hospital. Brighton & Hove has always held a special place in his heart – it’s where he has fond memories of family and friends. But it also brings back more difficult times.
Living with a learning disability has sometimes meant that Reg has struggled with decision-making. Without the right support around him, he sometimes found himself seeking friendship in places that left him vulnerable. This led to some very challenging situations.
Between 2017 and 2021, Reg spent several years in hospital before being granted conditional discharge. Sadly, he was recalled in 2022. Yet, during his most recent hospital stay, Reg worked incredibly hard to reflect on his past and to prepare for a brighter future.
That brighter future began in early 2025, when Reg started visiting Valley Drive in Brighton – one of Active Prospects’ newest homes in the city, part of our recent development into the Brighton & Hove area. Reg visited to see if Valley Drive could work for him as a home, and from the beginning he felt welcomed. With his own flat and the chance to be part of a supportive community, he spent time getting to know his new neighbours and the team, and quickly began to feel comfortable.
In August, Reg received the life-changing news that he was being discharged from hospital and could begin building his new life back in the city he calls home. For Reg, this move represents more than just a change of address – it’s the start of a new chapter filled with possibility, independence and belonging.
When asked what life is like with his new support team, Reg simply smiled and said: “They are good company and this is the best home I have ever lived in.”
