Pro-Active Committee Scoops National Award for Excellence

Active Prospects is celebrating the success of The Pro-Active Committee, its co-production partner and group of people it supports, which has just been named as the proud winner of the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards People’s Award 2018.

The Awards, held at the Birmingham International Convention Centre last Friday, saw hundreds of individuals with a learning disability and autism, or those supporting them, acknowledged as the ‘superheroes’ of their sector, and the best nationally.

The Pro-Active Committee beat off stiff competition from 11 other finalists in their category to win the prestigious People’s Award.  The Award recognises individuals or groups that offer exceptional encouragement and support for those with learning disabilities and autism.

The Pro-Active Committee focuses on social activities, inclusion, community involvement and active citizenship. There are 40 active members with a learning disability and/or autism, and the Committee is fully inclusive, giving everyone a voice using a wide range of communication tools. The Committee goes beyond traditional activity boundaries – covering fundraising, political engagement, and social enterprise development with volunteering/paid roles. Members flourish, gaining leadership skills, confidence and self-worth, with a multiplier effect as their peers are inspired, and wider lives enriched.

The judges of the award category said of The Pro-Active Committee: “An extremely motivated and inspiring group of people, who, through their own determination and hard work are actively changing the lives of other people in many varied ways and should continue to strive for the people they represent and help.”

Pat Lynch, Chair of the Pro-Active Committee, said: “I am so happy that we won, so many of us have blossomed through being part of the Pro-Active Committee and this will show others how they can also get involved and grow new skills, confidence and make a bigger impact on their community.”

Maria Mills, CEO, said: “We are so delighted and proud of everyone who makes the Pro-Active Committee such a success. They are simply inspirational and transform people’s lives.”
