FACTS, NOT FICTION.
Misinformation is harmful.
Let’s talk facts.
Autism doesn’t look one way
Every autistic person has their own story, their own strengths, and their own way of seeing the world. This April, we’re creating space for autistic people to share their voices, in their own words.
Active Prospects supports autistic adults across the South East to lead full, aspiring lives, on their terms. This Autism Acceptance Month, we’re inviting you to hear directly from people with a lived experience. Real change starts with listening.
Once you have met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person. We are all different.
Our Mythbuster
“You can tell if someone is autistic just by looking at them.”
Many people assume autism comes with obvious, visible signs. But autism is a neurological variation – not something you can see on the outside.
“All autistic people have a learning disability.”
Autism and learning disabilities are not the same thing. Autism is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental difference – not a measure of intelligence or ability. Many autistic people bring remarkable strengths: attention to detail, pattern recognition, and deep focus.
“We’re all a little bit autistic.”
Autism is a specific neurological variation – not a personality trait. Being a bit quirky or introverted isn’t autism. The best thing you can do is ask, listen, and resist the urge to compare.
“If someone seems fine, they must be fine.”
Masking is exhausting – and silence doesn’t mean comfort. Anxiety about what seems like a simple task can be overwhelming. Try not to assume someone is okay, just because they look it – the best approach is curiosity and kindness.
Meet people with lived experience
We support autistic adults to live life
We start with you – your strengths, your goals, your way of doing things. Every support plan is shaped around what matters most to each person we support, not what’s easiest for the system. No templates. No assumptions. Just personalised support designed together, so every autistic adult can live life on their own terms.
Everyone deserves a home that feels right for them. Whether that’s supported living, shared accommodation, or care in your own home, we help people choose where and how they want to live. Choice and control aren’t add‑ons, they’re built into everything we do, ensuring each person has a space that supports comfort, independence, and belonging.
Independence looks different for everyone, and it grows with confidence, opportunity, and the right support. We work alongside each person to build the skills and self‑belief they need, at their pace, in their way. Every autistic adult we support has a personalised progression plan that evolves as they do.
People with lived experience don’t just shape our work, they lead it. Autistic adults supported by Active Prospects play a central role in designing services, informing training, and influencing how we show up as an organisation. Voices like Daniel’s, Monisha’s, Niamh’s and Jon’s are not case studies, they are co‑creators.
