Celebrating Social Prescribing: Expanding our support

Within healthcare, the concept of social prescribing has been gaining momentum as an innovative approach to wellbeing. Marked by the annual Social Prescribing Day, this initiative has seen remarkable development since its spotlight moment in 2019, following the release of the NHS Long Term Plan.

What is Social Prescribing?

At its core, social prescribing is a means of connecting people to community groups and statutory services for practical and emotional support. The process involves professionals who play a pivotal role in guiding individuals to local, non-clinical services that can help improve their health and wellbeing. This could range from arts and gardening groups to cooking and sports activities, tailored to the person’s interests and needs.

Active Prospects: Expanding Support

In recent years, Active Prospects has increased its use of social prescribing to help people to improve their wellbeing. Recognising the alarming statistics surrounding neurodiverse individuals and their increased risk of suicide, Active Prospects is using social prescribing as part of a wellbeing coaching programme for autistic people who are also struggling with their mental health. The programme is funded by grants from the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board and the Department of Health and Social Care grant programme.

One example of social prescribing in action involves Kieran, who was taught to paddle board by the team at The SHAC in Betchworth. Through an activity close to his heart, Kieran found an improved mood and overall wellbeing from taking part in the paddle boarding – enhancing wellbeing through engaging, supportive community activities.

As social prescribing continues to evolve, its impact grows more profound. The annual Social Prescribing Day not only celebrates this progress but also highlights the ongoing need for resources and support to accommodate increasing demand. At Active Prospects, we understand the importance of social prescribing, and how this approach to health and wellbeing can support people who might otherwise be lost between medical care and community support. As we continue to celebrate and promote the efforts of all involved, we look forward to a future where social prescribing becomes an integral part of healthcare, enriching the lives of individuals across all ages and backgrounds.
