Over the last two years we’ve provided new homes for 32 people with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs. An additional 26 new homes are in the pipeline over the next year for people in priority need. For many people, it’s the first time they’ve had their own tenancy. We believe having their own tenancy is a crucial step in increasing people’s independence and enabling them to live aspiring lives.
We recently converted an empty property in Leatherhead into two separate, bespoke flats, thanks to an NHS grant of £340,000.
One of the new tenants, Sarah, describes the positive impact her new home is having on her life.
“I am so very happy since I moved into my new flat from my previous flat that I had been sharing with another person, which I wasn’t happy about as this made me feel very uncomfortable. Since my move, I am now fully in control of my flat and make decisions of what goes where. I love my flat because I am able to move freely about and engage well with my support staff. My room is big and very spacious, my kitchen is fabulous, and I love the charcoal grey colour used in my kitchen. My living area leads to a very beautiful garden where I can relax during summertime and I have also installed my trampoline in my garden with the help of my support staff.
The environment is very quiet although the builders next door makes so much noise, but I am however happy that I can access the shops around, walk exercises and do other things within the area. My mum told me that I am familiar with the area because my granddad lives in Dorking and I often visit him. Overall, I am happy and privileged to be independently living in my very own flat and able to make my own decisions. Thank you everyone for your support and help so far. I am very grateful.” – Sarah
