More Than a Job: Building a Career in Social Care

Why People Choose a Career in Social Care

To recognise and celebrate our colleagues during Careers Week, we spoke with staff from across Active Prospects at different stages of their careers and working across different services — from Support Workers to Home Managers.

While their journeys into social care were all different, they shared a common motivation: the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of the people they support.

Social care attracts individuals who are driven by purpose, compassion, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to their communities. For many, it is much more than a job.

What Inspires a Career in Social Care?

Mavis, Home Manager began her journey as a Care Assistant, where she developed a deep understanding of the importance of dignity, compassion, and person-centred support. Over time, Mavis realised she wanted to influence practice more widely,  supporting teams and helping shape high-quality support.

“Working in social care means being an advocate for people, promoting choice and independence, and ensuring individuals are supported with dignity and respect. It is a sector that requires heart, resilience, and commitment, but the impact we make every day makes it truly worthwhile.”

Sanjeewa, Support Worker, explains how his experience volunteering first inspired him to pursue social care professionally:

“I soon realised that caring for others gave me the same satisfaction and sense of purpose that I experienced through my volunteer work. That realisation inspired me to continue building my career in the care profession, where I feel I can truly make a positive difference in people’s lives.”

The Impact of Working in Care

For many, social care represents a deep sense of responsibility and pride. Reflecting on his journey, Sanjeewa shares:

“As a former volunteer social worker in my home country, I have always regarded this profession as more than just a job. To me, being a social care professional represents the fulfillment of my social responsibility as a global citizen. It is a commitment to contributing positively to society and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I am truly proud to be part of such a meaningful and impactful profession.”

A Career Built on Purpose

These reflections highlight the values that draw people into social care — empathy, dedication, and a commitment to helping others live fulfilling lives. They also demonstrate that social care offers meaningful career pathways, opportunities for development, and the chance to grow into leadership roles over time.

At Active Prospects, we are committed to supporting colleagues at every stage of their journey, creating environments where people can develop their skills, build confidence, and progress in rewarding careers that truly make a difference.

Careers Week is an opportunity to celebrate the people behind social care — individuals whose compassion and commitment shape the quality of support delivered every day.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the positive impact we have on people’s lives whether it’s someone gaining more independence, achieving a personal goal, or simply feeling safe and valued.” Mavis, Home Manager
